Who we are

BIOGRAPHY

Pinch Hitter is the indie rock vehicle for singer/songwriter Spencer Clayton Blake. Blake hails from Murfreesboro, TN, where he has played and performed on stage since 2002, writing songs and collaborating with a multitude of bands and artists since the age of 13.

Proficient in both upright and electric bass, a career in jazz performance or music education seemed in the cards for Blake, but rock and roll had other ideas. After high school, Blake performed with several Middle Tennessee rock outfits, including Tetsuo, Boyfriend, Davega Bike, Since Forever, and others.

After a move to Washington, DC and then back to TN two years later, Blake considered his music career to be finished, but soon became entrenched in the Chattanooga music scene playing with hardcore acts like The Claw and Deadbeat.

In 2023, Blake left all other projects to focus on something more personal: the project was called Pinch Hitter and promised to infuse nu metal, indie rock, hardcore, and rock and roll to make an aggressive, but melodic sound.

December 13th, 2024 marks the release of Pinch Hitter’s first LP, The Age of the Roach, a collection of ten deeply emotional songs that deal with suicide, betrayal, friendship, and most importantly, the impending end of humanity by a man-made holocaust.

The theme of nuclear winter is a backdrop to a collection of rock and punk songs that harken to the roots of rock and roll, but infuse elements of the 90s Pacific Northwest indie rock scene as well as some 2000s nu metal.

Blake prides himself on the authenticity of his songwriting, citing influences like Elliott Smith, Captain Beefheart, Isaac Brock, and David Bazan as inspirations for his honest, vulnerable approach.

Pinch Hitter performs as a full band as well as an acoustic act with Blake playing stripped down versions of the songs in a singer/songwriter style.

The Pinch Hitter live show is exciting and precise. The band flows between rock, punk, and metal with ease, always with a catchy melody floating across the top of the heavy, overdriven guitars.
